Aluvihare Rock Cave Temple
Located in Matale, a town which lies 25km from Kandy on route to the Cultural Triangle. The ancient Aluvihara Cave Temple is of great significance in the history of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. It was here that the teachings of Gauthama Buddha, the Triptaka, was committed to the written form. There is a cave dedicated to Venerable Buddagosa Thero, the monk who spent many years in this cave documenting the teachings of Gauthama Buddha to the ancient Pali script. These Buddhist scriptures in Pali influenced the development of the Sinhala language. The temple consists of large caves decorated with ancient paintings.
